When you visit the United States of America from another country, you should be aware of some differences.  We still use the old British system of measurement, (the system that the British no longer use).

When driving an auto in the USA, you should bear in mind that each of the 50 states has its own set of laws and regulations concerning driving.

The regulations are all very similar, but there are some subtle differences that you should know.  We provide some useful tips.

Tipping is a common practice in most restaurants, bars and other service establishments.  Waiters and waitresses are paid a substandard wage on the presumption that they will earn additional income from tips.  We provide some tips on tipping.

Each state has different driving laws

  • If you drive in the USA, remember that each of the 50 states has its own set of traffic laws and regulations.
  • Fortunately, most of the laws are the same, but some states have slightly different rules. When you rent a car, you should ask the agent if there are any special driving rules in that state.
  • When driving in multiple states, check a tour book for any special driving rules in each state.
Maximum speed limits in all states
  • The speed limit in most states is now 65 miles per hour (about 110 km/hr) except where signs indicate slower or faster speeds.

Minimum driving age

  • The minimum age for driving is 16 in most states but some states will not allow unrestricted driving until 18.
  • Some car rental agencies refuse to rent a car to any person under 25 years of age.

Seat belts are required

  • Nearly all states have laws requiring the driver and front passengers to wear seat belts.
  • Many states require children to wear seat belts even in the back seats. Nearly every state requires special child restraint seats for all young children.
  • Most states require motorcyclists to wear helmets.

Radar Detectors illegal in some states

  • Some states permit you to use radar detectors, while other states prohibit them. Many people seem to ignore this prohibition.
  • Some states require you to use daytime running lights during rain.

Strict enforcement of certain driving laws

At 1,568 miles, Interstate 35 is the ninth-longest Interstate Highway. It serves six states: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota.

  • The speed limit in front of every school is greatly reduced when classes are in session.
  • The reduced limits in these school zones is posted on a sign.
  • When these reduced limits are in effect, lights with the limit signg will flash.
  • You are required to stop in both directions for any school bus with flashing lights.

American Automobile Association Benefits

  • The American Automobile Association (AAA), commonly called the “triple A”, provides some wonderful services to drivers.
  • They have offices in every city and most of the larger towns in the US.
  • If you are a member of a national motor club in your home country, you can receive many of their benefits free of charge by simply showing your membership card.
  • The AAA provides free maps and tourist guides for any city or state in the US.
  • Many hotels offer discounted rates to AAA members.
The US highway system
  • The USA has an extensive system of interstate highways and state maintained roads. Some of the major highways are toll roads often called turnpikes.
  • All major interstate highways running north to south have odd numbers and are ordered from I-5 on the Pacific coast to I-95 along the Atlantic coast.

  • All interstates running east to west are evenly numbered beginning with I-8 and I-10 near the Mexican border to I-94 near Canada.
  • Want to know how long it will take to drive from one destination to the next? Visit our Distance Finder for the miles and kilometers between major attractions.

You might be knowing that the place of Winter Park Colorado is a vacation destination favored by Colorado residents.

The square state is being segmented  into two distinct geographic areas and it is interesting to note that the eastern half of the state is characterized by high flat plains and gently rolling hills all of them over 1000 meters above sea level. The western half is covered by the great cordillera of the Rocky Mountains with lofty peaks towering to above 4000 meters.

Keynote- Winter park is comparatively a less explores tourist destination

The eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains is known as the Front Range as well.

You might be knowing that most of the major tourist resorts andch as Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, Gunnison, Telluride and Crested Butte are located deep within the Rocky Mountains at least two, three or more hours drive west from the Denver Air Terminal.

You will come to know that the Winter Park is being located less than a 90 minute drive west of the Denver Airport, thus making it the most easily accessible mountain resort and a very popular destination for local residents to go on a weekend holiday.

You will come to know that unlike Vail, Aspen and many of the other Colorado resorts, Winter Park is less characterized by upscale hotels, expensive designer shops and world class restaurants.

Getting to Winter Park

From Denver, you simply drive west on interstate route 70 for about 30 minutes. This brings you into the heart of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to the little old gold mining towns of Idaho Springs and Georgetown.

From there, you turn north on route 40, and immediately begin climbing the mountain slopes up to Berthoud Pass (3446 meters / 11307 feet). The road is quite steep with several switchbacks. It is generally well maintained, but can, at times, be a precarious drive during the winter. Route 40 drops back down from the pass on the northern side where it passes the entry to the ski resorts of Mary Jane and Winter Park before entering the village of Winter Park.

This week, more than 6,000 attendees from 73 countries, including over 1,300 international and domestic travel buyers and nearly 500 media from the U.S. and abroad, attended the U.S. Travel Association’s 48th annual IPW. The event, which is the largest single generator of travel to the U.S., convened in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center from June 18-22.

Over the course of five days, a record of over 105,000 pre-scheduled business meetings were conducted between travel buyers and U.S. travel supplier organizations, who purchased a total of 1,352 booths. According to the independent research firm Rockport Analytics, travel initiated by IPW is projected to bring $4.7 billion in direct bookings to U.S. destinations over the next three years.

The delegate count at this year’s IPW represents a 20 percent increase since the last time the conference was held in New Orleans, in 2002. In addition to the usual robust number of delegates from the UK, Canada, Mexico, Germany and France, this year’s IPW saw tremendous growth in delegates from China, Taiwan, South Korea, Chile and Colombia.

The real payoff for IPW will ripple through the local New Orleans economy for an estimated three years following this year’s event. IPW is expected to generate $1.7 billion in economic impact to the city of New Orleans and attract more than one million additional visitors to the New Orleans area during that time.

China now represents the third-largest overseas travel market to the U.S., thanks in part to a bilateral agreement extending travel visa validity for visitors from China to 10 years.

“IPW is a wonderful, unique event in that it brings the world to the U.S. in one location,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow. “We remain dedicated to welcoming ever more international visitors to our country, and maintain that encouraging travel to the U.S. is the best way to keep us open and connected to the world.”

IPW brings travel professionals from every corner of the country—including representatives of hotels, destinations, attractions, museums, amusement parks and other travel businesses—together with the world’s top international tour operators and wholesalers that send travelers to the U.S. At IPW, buyers and sellers are able to conduct business that would otherwise be generated only through an exhaustive number of around-the-world trips.
