Freedom Trail will explore you with its three-mile Freedom Trail giving youa glimpse of the city’s principal historic monuments and sites. Young visitors can hunt for artifacts using the Old State House scavenger hunt or drop-in on one of our hands-on historical activities: Hear a story read aloud, fashion a coat of arms, create your own colonial portrait, design a broadside or make a paper lantern. J. L. Bell and The Boston Comics Roundtable present: Family Program: Comic History – Make Your Own Comic Exploring The Stamp Act
Friday, April 22, 2:00 p.m.

Comics, stamps, and protests will fill April school vacation week. Join the Massachusetts Historical Society, Shirley Eustis House, Longfellow House – Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site, and Old State House for hands-on history programs that will use comics to explore the Stamp Act and the protests that started America on the road to the Revolution. Participants will receive a comic book that tells the story of the stamp act in four chapters with art by Jesse Lonergan, John Carvajal, LJ Baptiste Ben Doane, and Jerel Dye.
Noted historian J.L. Bell will engage participants in the history of the Stamp Act through the stories of eighteenth-century children. After the discussion, local comic book artists associated with the Boston Comics Roundtable will assist and inspire young historians as they fill in the blank pages at the end of the comic book with their own comic.

The Old State House workshop is free with admission (adults $10 and children under 18 free). Space is limited and prior registration is required. The program and the comic book have been made possible through the support of the Society of the Cincinnati and Massachusetts Historical Society.

For 2,500 years, from the Greek agoras to today’s TED Talks, civic society has relied on public oration as a way to discuss and debate social and political issues. However, the prevalence of mass media in the 21st century has nearly obliterated the live and impassioned public speech that marked historical activism – including public responses to the Boston Massacre, and the “Meetings of the Body of the People” that led to the Boston Tea Party. So what has taken its place? Come listen to Boston College professor Celeste Wells and spoken word poet Danny DeLeon discuss the history of civic oration, and today’s different but equally powerful citizen orators.

Faneuil Hall will explore you with its “cradle of liberty,” or the Faneuil Hall built in 1740-42 by Huguenot merchant Peter Faneuil as a market hall. You will find the ground floor being occupied by market stalls as well.
