Key Prediction of the report- The study also found that by 2017 one-fourth of online travel transactions in the U.S. will occur through mobile devices, with consumers across all markets increasingly turning to smartphones and tablets to search for and book travel.

For better or worse, the future of travel bookings appears to be online, according to a recent report from travel industry research provider Phocuswright.

The study, titled “Channel Surfing: Where Consumers Shop for Travel Online,” was sponsored by Expedia and set out to analyze the key differences between online travel agencies (OTAs) and supplier websites.

The findings of the report…

online booking 3

  • The report found that by next year more than half (52 percent) of all travel bookings in Europe will be made online. But the U.S. won’t be far behind, with 45 percent of travel bookings being made online by 2017.
  • Asia Pacific ranks third at 37 percent.
  • When comparing hotels and airlines, the study uncovered that OTAs are better positioned to secure hotel bookings than flight bookings.
  • In the developed markets Phocuswright analyzed, 61 percent to 75 percent of online consumers seeking a hotel used an OTA, compared to just 15 percent to 44 percent who visited a hotel’s website directly.
  • Nearly one-third of OTA bookers (30 percent) indicated that they prefer OTAs because they believe they give them the best price available.
  • However, simplicity is typically the major difference for consumers, the report shows, with ease of use beating out price as the leading reason consumers look to OTAs.

Key pointAmericans are missing out on billions of dollars in credit card travel benefits and 80 percent of respondents said that they don’t own a  travel rewards credit card

Does anyone say “no” to cheaper travel? Not that we know of. This is why learning to use your credit card miles to redeem lower-cost travel is a must.

According to Forbes, Americans are missing out on billions of dollars in credit card travel benefits. The article also notes that a CreditCards.org survey found that nearly 80 percent of respondents said that they don’t own a  travel rewards credit card. Ten percent of those who don’t own one say that the reason is that they don’t know how they work. And 17 percent of respondents who do actually own one don’t bother to redeem rewards.

According to Forbes, it is estimated that there are $16 billion per year in travel rewards left on the table each year.

“The general rule of thumb for reward miles or any credit card rewards (such as points) is that they are worth $0.01 each,” explained Matthew Coan, owner of credit card comparison website Casavvy.com. “The main goal is to earn as many miles as possible and then get the most when you redeem them. Most cards that offer miles as their rewards make redeeming them for travel expenses your best option.”

You might be knowing that while traveling, crowded, cramped and noisy beaches can b e a real nuisance for you.

beachbeach 1

This blog will give you a fair idea as to how to make most out of your beach exploration!

  • Pick the Right day and time

It is interesting to exploring the beaches at the early morning hours are usually the best times to find empty beaches.

As a matter of fact, you should remember that there are many resorts, Friday is the busiest day of the week with guests checking out mid-morning and new ones not arriving until mid-afternoon.

You may schedule your stay to depart on any other day of the week.

  • Go in the off-season

Sure, if you plan your travel in the off-season, almost any day of the week may be uncrowded.

However, you should know the time of off-season kicks in at a particular locale.

  • Be prepared to hike

You might be knowing that one of the suggestible way to enjoy the isolated beaches in the world often include hikes down steep trails or over multiple dunes. Be  ready  to go the distance and you could have the place to yourself.

  • Avoid well-marked beaches
  • Consider beaches that attract divers

Scuba divers that dive from shore generally avoid beaches that are overly crowded with swimmers. Try a dive info site like ShoreDiving.com for beaches that are often known only to locals and the diving community.

Needless to say that there is no dearth for beaches in the US!

Then what about some of the favourite beaches for the Americans here…like the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, takes the crown as America’s favorite beach, according to the results of a survey conducted by recreational information hub Tipspoke.

In a simple but effective survey, 62 of 1,000 Americans named Myrtle Beach their favorite beach in the U.S.
Trailing Myrtle Beach is Miami Beach, Florida; Clearwater Beach, Florida; Destin Beach, Florida and Daytona Beach, Florida.

Clearwater Beach and Destin Beach tied for third, receiving 29 votes each.

Rounding out the top nine are Siesta Key, Florida; Cocoa Beach, Florida; Venice Beach, California and Huntington Beach, California.

Four beaches tied for 10th, with travelers showing an equal amount of love for Jones Beach, New York; Malibu Beach, California; Newport Beach, California and Panama City Beach, Florida. The four destinations received 11 votes each.

“The Carolinas made an impressive showing with Myrtle Beach coming in first and Outer Banks making the extended list,” said Tipspoke CEO Stacey Sao in a statement. “Florida and California made the strongest overall showings, dominating the top 10.”

“Jones Beach also made the cut, bringing one home for the great state of New York,” she added. “Every single one of these beaches is a real winner and each has something unique and special to offer.”

Notable beaches that finished outside of the top 10 include La Jolla, California; Pismo Beach, California; Long Beach, California; Ocean City, New Jersey; Outer Banks, North Carolina and Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Interestingly, Hawaii’s beaches were shut out of the top 10. Other states that were surprisingly absent include Maryland, Massachusetts and Texas, among others.

What makes Tipspoke’s survey so unique is that it comprised a three-step process designed to eliminate all potential bias.

The survey was distributed broadly across the U.S. using Google Consumer Surveys, it offered an open question rather than a list of beaches and ran until more than 1,000 responses were charted.

Year over year, New Orleans has gained momentum on the cruise front, with more lines and larger ships choosing to call the city’s port home –  with 2016 serving as an excellent case in point.

One of the more notable developments for this year was the April debut of Carnival Cruise Line’s 2,754-passenger Carnival Triumph, which will sail on year-round four- and five-day Western Caribbean itineraries from New Orleans. The ship replaced the smaller 2,052-passenger Carnival Elation, joining the 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream, which sails on seven-day Western Caribbean itineraries roundtrip from New Orleans. The positioning of Carnival Triumph in New Orleans has increased the line’s capacity there by 34 percent, and Carnival officials say they expect the ships to bring 450,000 passengers to New Orleans on an annual basis.

In August, French America Line, a new river cruise company, will debut the 150-passenger Louisiane out of New Orleans on Mississippi cruises. The ship formerly operated as the Columbia Queen with Delta Queen Steamboat Company and Majestic America Line.

“The cruise business is one of the New Orleans tourism industry’s focuses, and we have seen a steady increase in cruise passenger numbers,” says Kim Priez, senior vice president of tourism for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “With the larger Carnival Triumph and the addition of French America Line, we are excited to see what 2016 has to offer for cruise visitation.”

Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines’ America, a new 185-passenger paddle wheeler, kicked off its inaugural season with a Mississippi cruise roundtrip from The Big Easy. America will operate itineraries from the port throughout the year, along with its sister ships, the 150-passenger Queen of the Mississippi and 170-passenger American Eagle.

In 2018, New Orleans will become Viking River Cruises’ first U.S. homeport, with the line expected to deploy two ships per year for a total of six ships entering service over a three-year timeframe.

Other ships with itineraries out of New Orleans this year include Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Dawn, American Steamboat Co.’s American Queen and Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity.

The city continues to rise in popularity as a cruise destination for good reason. “New Orleans’ food, music and relaxed pace makes it the perfect cruise port city. Many say New Orleans is the ‘most northern point in the Caribbean,’” says Priez. “Cruise passengers can begin or end their vacations by enjoying some of our amazing restaurants, or dancing the night away to award-winning music. The cruise ships dock at the foot of the French Quarter, allowing visitors to enjoy two vacations in one –  even if they only have a few hours extra to spare.”

Attractions near the port include Harrah’s Casino, the Aquarium of the Americas and the IMAX Theater.

Cruise visitors can also take in the city’s considerable number of festivals that pay homage to New Orleans’ food, culture, music and film on a year-round basis. “The variety of events and festivals continues to grow, with more and more unique festivals being planned every year,” says Priez. “One tip that we like to tell our agents is if their clients are interested in coming to New Orleans, before they choose their dates, agents should really take a look at what’s happening.”

Agents can also promote commissionable pre- and post-cruise packages offered at 15 hotels. “These offers vary from hotel to hotel, but you’ll find complimentary parking for the cruise, discounted room rates, complimentary port shuttles, complimentary breakfast and other perks for your cruise guests,” says Priez, adding that 83 percent of cruise visitors spend at least one night in the city.

The CVB offers webinars and certification programs that are specifically designed to help agents sell cruises out of New Orleans. It is also offering fam trips through Aug. 31, with hotel rates that start at $69. Many of the agent hotel packages include discounted parking, free Wi-Fi, room upgrades and complimentary breakfast. Agents can request VIP passes for discounts at restaurants, museums and attractions. The CVB is expected to offer another series of fam trips over the Christmas holidays.

NEW ORLEANS TOURISM NUMBERS CONTINUE TO CLIMB

If last year’s tourism numbers are any indication, New Orleans has come a very long way since Hurricane Katrina made landfall more than 10 years ago. The city welcomed 9.78 million visitors in 2015, an increase of 2.7 percent over 2014, and visitor spending rose $7.05 billion, which represents a 3.5 percent increase, according to the 2015 New Orleans Area Visitor Profile study.

In 2004, New Orleans welcomed 10.1 million visitors, who spent $4.9 billion. By contrast, in 2006 visitor numbers dropped to 3.7 million and spending to $2.9 billion. Since 2010, visitor spending in New Orleans has increased by nearly 33 percent, according to the study.

”The tourism industry has invested in New Orleans and the impact is a better experience for the visitors,” notes Kim Priez, senior vice president of tourism for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Our hotels are undergoing multiple renovations and more than 17 new hotel properties, like the Four Seasons, are in the works,” says Priez. The study found that travelers who overnighted in hotels spent an average of $1,011 per person, per trip and stayed 4.2 nights in 2015.

”It’s an exciting time for New Orleans, and I think visitors can really feel that energy,” says Priez.

ship

Visitors to the birthplace of America can soon climb aboard a life-size Revolutionary era privateer ship in the heart of the city’s historic district, while staying firmly planted on land.

Builders working with the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia are crafting half of a ship — which at 45 feet can still impress in scope and scale — to invite visitors to learn a lesser known story of the Revolution through the lesser known 14-year-old James Forten.

The ship will act as one of the museum’s primary immersive exhibits, explore maritime involvement in the Revolution and highlight Forten, a free African-American boy who served on a privateer ship and later became a prominent abolitionist and wealthy Philadelphia businessman. The museum is set to open in April just two blocks from Independence Hall.

R. Scott Stephenson, museum vice president of collections, exhibitions and programming, said Forten “represents a founding generation” that spans ethnicities, backgrounds and ages.

Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing was one of the major maritime ports during the Revolution, but Stephenson said “many don’t know African-American men and white men fought side by side on ships, and that they were probably the most integrated places in the (war) effort.”

So, to help the public learn more about the war effort and allow them to easily walk aboard a Revolutionary era boat, the museum asked for a ship that wouldn’t float. Building such a ship was a bit counterintuitive for experienced shipwright Mark Donahue.

“We’re building a boat that won’t float. It kind of messes around with our minds some of the time,” said Donahue, director of the Workshop of the Water at the Independence Seaport Museum.

Donahue led some 20 people tasked with crafting the $175,000 replica in a nearly yearlong process. About one-thousand pieces will be transferred to the museum in August to reassemble the ship on site.

The exhibit will have an accessible ramp and builders will outfit the ship with lights to create the illusion of water and a speaker system to surround the exhibit with sounds of people working on a privateer ship.

Stephenson said the museum’s exhibits will create a “connecting narrative” for historic pieces spread across Philadelphia and the nation, a narrative that is often lost, he said.

“Nowadays probably the most important single thing we can do is get people to believe any of this really happened,” he said.

Stephenson said the ship exhibit centered on Forten’s story and the museum’s artifacts will explore “one of the great unfinished aspects of the American Revolution: making the promise of equality apply to all people.”
