With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Santa Barbara is a popular destination for visitors looking for a warm weather escape. To drive awareness and increase visitation during the destination’s November through March shoulder season, Visit Santa Barbara targeted travelers in cooler-weather cities with the “Brighten Your Day” social media campaign.

This personalized, strategic approach earned Visit Santa Barbara a 2016 Poppy Award for Best Social Media Campaign. Initially geared toward Seattle residents, the campaign included real-time giveaways of Santa Barbara-themed gifts to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook users in Seattle who utilized the custom#BrightenYourDay hashtag. To generate more buzz, Visit Santa Barbara expanded the campaign to Portland, Denver and Chicago, giving cold-weather dwellers a chance to win a Santa Barbara getaway.

“We surprised users with something that related to their entry and was Santa Barbara-centric,” said JessyLynn Perkins, Digital Marketing Manager at Visit Santa Barbara. “One woman said palm trees brightened her day, so we shipped an actual palm tree to her. The whole campaign was about bringing the warmth of Santa Barbara to people in cold-weather markets to truly brighten their day.”

By making an emotional connection with users, Visit Santa Barbara’s campaign was more than just a giveaway – the gifts were seen as meaningful acts of kindness. It also helped keep Santa Barbara top of mind for travelers considering a vacation destination. The campaign, produced in partnership with the agency Sparkloft Media, reached 7.1 million users and received more than 1,200 competition entries, with a total of 36,222 engagements.

SOCIAL MEDIA BEST PRACTICES

Visit Santa Barbara’s social media efforts consistently drive awareness to the destination, highlighting local activities and attractions while also providing shareable content for users to show their love of Santa Barbara with friends and family, Perkins said.

“We have a very specific objectives-driven social strategy to which we base our performance measurement and success,” Perkins said. “Combining rich content, advertising, influencers and campaigns, we reach specific audiences based on our goals.”

When it comes to social media best practices, Perkins also stresses the importance of authenticity.

“Fans are your biggest advocates and best source for creating content,” she said. “Every social strategy should begin with the desire to give fans the content they crave. Allowing fans to have a hand in creating our content provides our audience with the chance to be a part of the story and build brand ambassadors.”

Additional social media must-dos include: always sourcing your images and providing proper credit, tailoring posts to the appropriate platform and posting with a purpose that meets your goals (quality vs. quantity).

LOOKING AHEAD

In the coming months, Visit Santa Barbara will continue its out-of-market push. With the newly relaunched American Airlines non-stop flight service from Dallas to Santa Barbara, the Visit Santa Barbara team is hitting the streets of Dallas to activate a social media campaign in conjunction with the announcement.

Santa Barbara Municipal Airport ended direct service to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport in 2009. The restored service to DFW is expected to provide an increased economic impact to the area, which has experienced a decline in air travel in recent years.

The DMO also has plans to become more active in live-streaming messaging apps, providing real-time interactions with the destination.

“There is no place like Santa Barbara, and we strive for our marketing programs to embody the attitude, look and feel of our destination,” Perkins said.

Destinations can look forward to visiting Santa Barbara when the city hosts the 2017 Outlook Forum Feb. 27-March 1. Register online today.

Visit California hosts two successful media events in Western Canada

During the first week of May 2016 Visit California’s earned media team held two distinctive media events in Western Canada providing a platform for destination partners to network with local Canadian media.

Over a five-course, California-inspired lunch, 21 partners from around The Golden State were able to mingle with 21 Vancouver-area media and share their top story ideas. Media in attendance included editors from the Vancouver Sun, PAX News, Lipstick Lifestyle and Western Living, and contributors to the Vancouver Courier, Huffington Post Canada, the National Post and The Province. Connections made at this luncheon have already proven fruitful with upcoming media visits planned and an article posted on Pax News West the week of the event.

At Visit California’s second-ever media event in Calgary an unprecedented 18 media attended to meet with 12 destination partners. The large number of attendees in this smaller media market (and increase from the first Calgary event) is a testament to the market’s interest in California and the amazing stories each destination holds. The media in attendance included editors from IMPACT and WestJet Magazines and freelancers representing Avenue Magazine, Food Network Canada, Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, Calgary Herald and more. Guests enjoyed signature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and popsicles, while making connections and taking selfies.

Upcoming Canada Sales & Media Mission:

The PR track will reach top-tier media and influencers through media appointments and networking events, offering more one-on-one pitching opportunities and unique experiences such as editorial insights panels.

Know your North America…

  • You might be knowing that the northern part of the large supercontinent known as Americas or New World, North America is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean from the north and by the Atlantic Ocean from the east, by the Pacific Ocean from the west and south.
  • North America has an overland border with South America continent, which runs along the state boundary between Panama and Colombia.
  • Totally in North America, there are 23 officially recognized independent states.
  • The largest of them is Canada, followed by also rather big the United States, these two giants together occupy more than 79% of the whole continent area.
  • The smallest country in this part of the world is Saint Kitts and Nevis, it is only two small islands in the Caribbean.

More about visiting North America…

  • Research visa requirements prior to arriving in North America! Mexico tends to be the most lenient with a fee for a tourist card. Canada allows some citizens up to six months without visa while others must enter with a Temporary Resident Visa or other identification.
  • The United States also varies Some citizenships are allowed visa waivers (though travelers must apply for an ESTA online approval) while others must research the specific visa requirements and fees (up to $200) as details vary.
  • Entry to the United States can be a very long and strict process. Remember, everyone has to go through this process, so try not to get too flustered or impatient as that can make the process even longer. Stay within restrictions for carry-on liquids (maximum 3 ounces per bottle) within a clear, plastic bag (maximum 1 quart). Be prepared to take off shoes, belts, jackets, and any metals before going through security x-ray machines.
  • If you are driving over any country lines by car, it is important to double-check border crossing requirements. You may have to show proof of the rental agreement, insurance (i.e. Mexico does not accept American automobile insurance), registration, a dirver’s licence, and other documents (i.e. Canada requires an insurance certificate).
  • Crossing borders now requires a passport regardless of citizenship (including United States, Canadian, and Mexican citizens)

  • Research visa requirements prior to arriving. Some citizenships are allowed visa waivers (though travelers must apply for an ESTA online approval) while others must research the specific visa requirements and fees (up to $200) as details vary. If you are entering through an international airport, be prepared for stringent security and long lines. Simple daypacks and clothes can quicken the slow process.
  • Exchange rates mean that America can be expensive for travelers visiting from other countries. Make sure to bring extra cash, especially for spending in the big cities.
  • Travel Insurance — The US has some of the best health care in the world but it’s also extremely expensive. Travel insurance is a must.
  • Tipping is customary in restaurants and is not included in the bill except for some parties that are large in number. Adding on a tip of 15-20% is standard.
  • Although not as common as hotels or motels, there are youth hostels in The States.

You will enjoy the Giant Panda Research Station here at the San Diego Zoo having  giant pandas ever since two of the adorable black-and-white creatures came to visit in 1987.

The zoo and China agreed on a 12-year research loan of two giant pandas, Bai Yun and Shi Shi. A brand-new exhibit area was built for the pandas, which has since been expanded and renovated and is now called the Giant Panda Research Station.

As of now, you will find here four giant pandas, the facility can comfortably house up to six! It is interesting to explore the pandas from the public panda viewing area inhousing the  Giant Panda Team, made up of the pandas’ keepers and researchers.

You can be sure to stroll through the Giant Panda Discovery Center, located nearby including the climb-in panda den, interactive exhibits and even a chance to find out what pandas sound and smell like!
